My Book Rating System ★

Hello everyone! In today’s post, I’m going to share my rating system for books.

Introduction

When it comes to assessing the quality of a book, a star rating system can provide a quick glimpse into readers' opinions. Ranging from one to five stars, this system has become a ubiquitous way for readers to share their evaluations and for potential readers to gauge the worth of a book. Below you can find a short guide on how I rate my readings.

★:

A one-star rating typically signifies a book that failed to engage me on multiple levels. I use this rating to express deep dissatisfaction with the writing, plot, characters, or overall delivery of the book. One star indicates that the book fell short of any expectations and may have significant flaws that hindered the reading experience, I forced myself to finish it and I will tell you to not bother reading it yourself.

★★:

A two-star rating suggests that the book had some merit but ultimately fell flat in execution. I have found the storyline predictable, the characters lacking depth, were repetitive or kept making the same mistake, and the writing style and its topics forced. While the book may have had potential, it failed to deliver and offer a truly satisfying experience. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

★★★:

A three-star rating is neutral in nature and signifies a book that met expectations without exceeding them. I might have found the book enjoyable but felt that it lacked innovation or failed to stand out among other works in the same genre. A three-star book can be described as average, providing a decent reading experience without leaving a significant impact. In particular, the characters might not be my favourite and their actions might not make much sense, as well as while being an enjoyable book, it might took me a while to get into it.

★★★★:

A four-star rating indicates a great book that I consider above average and highly enjoyable. I might use this rating to praise well-developed characters, a captivating plot, or an exceptional writing style. It usually contains minor flaws, something small that I didn’t like, or a twist that hurt the book in my opinion. A four-star book is likely to have solid characters, it leaves me overall satisfied (but unsatisfied at some level) and I’m happy to recommend it to others.

★★★★★:

A five-star rating usually represents the profound emotional impact that has on me. I award five stars to books that I deeply resonate with, books I can’t put down and I can’t stop thinking about them, even after days and weeks of reading. They make me feel all the feels, they are leaving a lasting impact or offering a truly exceptional reading experience. These books are often praised for their originality, thought-provoking themes, or masterful storytelling and I can’t stop talking about them to everyone I know (even if they don’t care!).

Conclusion

In an age where book recommendations abound, the star rating system serves as a valuable tool for both readers and authors. While individual ratings can be subjective, collectively, they offer insights into the overall reception of a book. Whether looking for a new read or seeking feedback on one's work, understanding the nuances of the star rating system can help navigate the diverse landscape of literature.
